No he is a shadow dweller. Originally he was just a mass of evil kind of like Aku then some sorcerror personified it to an ultimate weapon to get back at being exiled by the emperor of Japan. Nazaru eventually turns on him because sorcerror was weak without him. Nazaru then decided to destroy everything. And the rest is history.
